The term "bungalow" is a type of single-story house that derives its name from the Gujarati and Hindi word meaning "Bengali". This type of house was traditionally small, only one storey, thatched and had a wide veranda. Bungalows today are a type of house that are usually single story or one and a half stories, and can be quite large. An American favorite since the early 1900's, the bungalow house plan has been and still is a very popular home style today. Bungalow homes are usually 1 to 1 and 1 1/2 stories and feature sloping roofs, a gable centered over the main living area, and eaves. Normally a bungalow style house is composed of brick, stone, stucco, horizontal siding, or wood shingles. These homes also feature a front porch and some of the larger bungalows have an "L" shaped porch that wraps around one side of the home. |
